Hercules vs. Vampires is a musical reimagining of the legendary Mario Bava's 1961 sword-and-sandal creature-feature — a color-drenched epic that was already highly operatic in scope. When the actors on the big screen, including British body builder Reg Park (mentor to Arnold Schwarzenegger) and the great Christopher Lee (Hammer's Dracula, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars) open their mouths to speak, the audience hears their lines belted-out by a cast of nine opera singers, accompanied by the LA Opera Orchestra. This campy 'midnight movie' outshines its genre in ambitious special effects and striking cinematography, perfectly married to Patrick Morganelli's adventurous new opera composition. Fill your Halloween with equal amounts of BEEF and CHEESE in the amazing gothic cathedral that is The United Theater on Broadway, and feel free to come in costume!
Music and adapted libretto by Patrick Morganelli
Running time: one hour and 15 minutes, with no intermission

Dianara is the rightful heir to the throne of Acalia, but her uncle, Lycos, has seized power. He has put her under a spell and keeps her locked out of sight. Her only hope is the mighty Hercules, who loves her. Lycos has sent assassins to kill Hercules upon his return from battle, but they were unable to overpower the immortal son of Zeus.
When Hercules arrives, Kyros tells him that Dianara is not yet queen. Hercules goes to Lycos for an explanation. Lycos says that she has taken ill and is unfit to rule. When Hercules sees Dianara, she doesn’t recognize him. Kyros nervously arranges to meet Hercules in secret so that he can explain more, but when Hercules arrives, Kyros is dead. Hercules consults the oracle Medea, who tells him that a magic stone in Hades would cure Dianara. In order to ensure a safe return, he must first obtain a golden apple from the Hesperides, women imprisoned by Pluto, god of the underworld, in a land of darkness.
Joined by Theseus and Telemachus, Hercules travels to the Hesperides. Zarathusa, their queen, shows Hercules the sacred tree that bears the golden apple. Retrieving the treasure tests all of the hero’s strength. Meanwhile, Pluto has forced the Hesperides to deliver Theseus and Telemachus to Procrustes, who kills his victims by either stretching them or cutting their legs off to fit the beds they lie upon. Hercules destroys the monster, opening a portal to the underworld, where they find the magic stone surrounded by a lake of boiling lava. Hercules successfully makes his way to it, but Theseus falls into the lava and disappears.
Theseus awakens, tended by a beautiful woman who promises to lead him back to the land of the living. He determines to take her with him. Reunited, the adventurers set sail for home. When a storm threatens to sink the ship, the woman tells Theseus to throw the golden apple overboard. He does and the storm subsides.
Chaos has overtaken Acalia. The mysterious beauty reveals that she is Persephone, Pluto’s daughter, and that the misfortune around them is her father’s vengeance. Hercules brings the stone to Dianara’s bedside and stands guard as she recovers.
Lycos bargains with the god of evil to gain immortality by killing Dianara and drinking her blood. To distract Hercules, the king convinces him to consult with the oracle to resolve the turmoil around them. Lycos then kills Dianara’s handmaiden Helena and drags the princess away.
Medea tells Hercules that Theseus must send Persephone back to Hades. When Hercules begs Theseus to make this sacrifice, the two come to blows. Persephone intervenes, promising to leave—and return the stone to her father—if Hercules spares Theseus. She also warns the unsuspecting hero that Lycos plans to kill Dianara.
As Hercules searches the palace for his beloved, an army of the dead emerges from the tombs. He escapes them, and discovers Lycos about to sacrifice Dianara. Hercules overcomes Lycos and vanquishes the advancing legion of ghouls. Hercules and Dianara are reunited forever.
