Two Legendary Voices: Juan Diego Flórez and Patti LuPone

There’s no shortage of excitement on our mainstage this season, and February is no exception. Alongside the hypnotic presence of Philip Glass’ Akhnaten, we’re thrilled to welcome two extraordinary artists whose voices have shaped generations of music lovers. Opera superstar Juan Diego Flórez and Broadway icon Patti LuPone take the stage this month, giving us the chance to see two living legends live.

Juan Diego Flórez   (February 10th)

Juan Diego Flórez grew up in the vibrant soundscape of Peru, his childhood love of Peruvian folk and pop music led him to writing songs and singing them in piano bars when he was only a teenager. This led Flórez to study music at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, which eventually led to performing at the 1996 Rossini Festival where he made his first breakthrough. Since then, Flórez has become a top interpreter for Puccini, Donizetti, and Rossini.

Flórez’s singing isn’t the only thing we admire about him, his philanthropy in Peru has led him to receive the country’s highest honor: Knight Guard Cross in the Order of the Sun of Peru.   Suffice it to say, Flórez is an icon of the opera world, and we’re thrilled to welcome him back to our stage. His recital in 2023 is still fresh in our memory and for those lucky enough to have seen him as Count Almaviva in our 2009 production of The Barber of Seville,  then you know why he’s considered a Rossini specialist.  For this concert, Flórez is set to sing arias from Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini, Rossini, and more as well as some zarzuela romances. It's safe to say that we have another special memory with Flórez on the way.

Patti LuPone  (Feb 21)

Following her appearance with us last season, Patti LuPone returns this year to mark the 25th anniversary of her cabaret show,  Matters of the Heart.   LuPone conceived the show during the peak of her career when the desire to try her hand in storytelling came over her. What better theme could LuPone have chosen for the show than the complicated and beautiful thing we call love.

This anniversary concert is a perfect time for this Tony-winner to revisit how her perspective on love has evolved, framed by songs from Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Judy Collins, Cydni Lauper, and a selection of show tunes. This Broadway legend is joined by the Australian quartet Four Play String Quartet which specializes in a variety of genres from hip-hop to folk music. Together we’ll get to take a trip with LuPone looking back at this period of her career and perhaps humming some songs together along the way.
