LA Opera presents free performances of Noah's Flood at the Cathedral (May 8-9)
Music Director James Conlon conducts a cast of hundreds in two free performances of the family-friendly opera at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
(Los Angeles) April 7, 2026 — Next month, LA Opera's professional artists will collaborate with more than 300 volunteer members of the Los Angeles musical community to present two free performances of Benjamin Britten's Noah's Flood at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Conducted by Music Director James Conlon, the performances will take place on May 8 and 9.
Thanks to generous longtime support from the Dan Murphy Foundation, LA Opera is able to produce Noah's Flood and offer it free of charge as a special gift to the greater Los Angeles community. LA Opera has presented annual community productions at the Cathedral led by Mr. Conlon since 2007. This year's presentation of Noah's Flood will be the eighth time that the Britten opera has been produced in that venue.
Performers will include singers of all ages and student instrumentalists from the greater Los Angeles community, along with members of the LA Opera Orchestra and professional vocal soloists including baritone Hyungjin Son as Noah, mezzo-soprano Peabody Southwell as Mrs. Noah, and actor Jamieson Price as the Voice of God. The production is directed by Eli Villanueva.
An empowering story of unwavering faith, Noah's Flood is based on a 15th-century play which recounts the Old Testament story of one family (along with a boat full of adorable animals) coming together to brave a storm that changes the world forever. This exciting opera brings together a cast of hundreds to explore themes of peace, love and perseverance.
