Christian Lacroix studied classics and art history, then turned to fashion. He began at Hermès and then at Guy Paulin before taking over the artistic direction of the Jean Patou fashion house from 1982 to 1987, when he created his own fashion house. Since the 1980s, he has designed costumes for theater, opera and ballet. More recently, he has become an industrial designer (TGV, hotels, Cinémas Pathé Gaumont) and a scenographer for his own work.
He designed sets and costumes for George Balanchine’s ballet A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Opéra National de Paris, Tannhäuser at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken, Germany, Feydeau’s play L’Hotel du libvre-echange at the Comédie-Française and for Adolphe Adam’s Le Postillon de Lonjumeau at the Opéra-Comique. For the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, he designed costumes for Pelléas et Mélisande, Era la notte, Don Pasquale, The Clemency of Titus and The Marriage of Figaro.
