The Performers
With a career that includes performances on the world’s leading stages, tenor Juan Diego Flórez has established himself as one of opera’s greatest talents with his expressive singing and virtuosity. A native of Lima, Peru, he studied there and at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He made his opera debut in 1996 in the leading role of Corradino in Matilde di Shabran at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Italy. He now regularly performs at Milan’s La Scala, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and in musical capitals such as Paris, Florence, Bologna, Genoa, Turin, Rome, San Francisco, Chicago, Munich, Barcelona, Madrid and Salzburg. Known for his many bel canto roles, he has recently expanded into the French romantic repertoire, including Werther, Roméo et Juliette and Les Huguenots. His next projects include performances in La Bohème, Faust, Guillaume Tell and The Tales of Hoffmann. In 2011, he founded the Sinfonía por el Perú, a social integration project, with the goal of promoting the artistic and personal development through music of children and young people at risk in his home country. He made his LA Opera debut in 2009 as Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville and returned for a recital in 2023.

Pianist Vincenzo Scalera made his LA Opera debut performing with Mr. Flórez in a 2023 recital. He was born into an Italian-American family in New Jersey and was educated at the Manhattan School of Music. He then continued his studies in Italy and was appointed a coach and pianist at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he worked with conductors including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Gianandrea Gavazzeni and Carlos Kleiber. He has performed in all the world’s prominent musical centers and his discography includes recordings with Sumi Jo (La Promessa), Renata Scotto (Complete Songs of Verdi), Carlo Bergonzi (Canzone: The Art of Bel Canto and Carlo Bergonzi in Concert), José Carreras (Comeback Concerts) and Anita Rachvelishvili (Élégie).
