The Old Man and the Sea

May 20 - 23, 2027
The Wallis

Bloody, but unbowed

  • From composer Paola Prestini and librettist Royce Vavrek, the duo behind The Hubble Cantata
  • An avant-garde score meets a splash zone warning
  • What other opera tackles baseball, aging, religion, and environmentalism?

An outcast fisherman was born under an unlucky star. But day after day, Santiago casts his nets, waiting for the catch that could redeem and reward his efforts.

Breathtakingly staged with eight pools of water enhanced with dynamic lighting, costumes and sound, our latest collaboration with the groundbreaking Beth Morrison Projects  transforms Hemingway's Pulitzer-winning novel into a rumination on age, loss,  nature, and what it means to be beautifully, stubbornly human.

Composed by Paola Prestini. Libretto by Royce Vavrek.

Running time: approximately  one hour and 40 minutes, performed without intermission.

Sung in: English with projected subtitles

Produced by Beth Morrison Projects.
