Eric Sean Fogel
From: Charleston, South Carolina. LA Opera: choreographer of Florencia en el Amazonas (2014) and Candide (2018); associate director of West Side Story (2025); associate director and choreographer of Candide (2027).
Eric Sean Fogel is a first-generation American of German and Iranian descent from Charleston, South Carolina.
He is an artistic associate of the Glimmerglass Festival, where he has worked for 16 seasons, directing and choreographing more than 30 productions, most recently The Rake's Progress in 2025. He is also a guest stage director at the Metropolitan Opera, where he currently serves as revival director for The Magic Flute and Norma.
His world premiere credits include Klangwolke '24 for Brucknerhaus Linz; Jeanine Tesori's The Lion, the Unicorn, and Me; Frank Wildhorn's Artus! Excalibur; Odyssey, Wilde Tales and Robin Hood for the Glimmerglass Festival; Princess Butterfly for XSBN in China; and Songbird, co-created with Jim Lowe and Kelley Rourke for Washington National Opera.
A longtime collaborator of Francesca Zambello, he has worked on numerous productions for Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, including Porgy and Bess, Samson et Dalila, Don Giovanni, Candide, West Side Story, The Little Prince, Florencia en el Amazonas, The Lion, the Unicorn, and Me and La Forza del Destino.
He has also created new productions for Opera Australia, Opéra National de Bordeaux, Brucknerhaus Linz, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theater, Hawaii Opera Theatre, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, LA Opera, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Milan Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week, Opera Philadelphia, Paris Fashion Week, the Royal Opera of Versailles, Seattle Opera, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Théâtre du Capitole, Theater St. Gallen and Washington National Opera.
His associate credits include Broadway's Everyday Rapture; My Fair Lady and The Most Happy Fella at Lincoln Center; Bells Are Ringing for New York City Center Encores!; and the national tours of Little House on the Prairie, We the People and Happy Days: The Musical.
As a dancer, he spent 14 years with Ben Munisteri Dance Projects, performing at Lincoln Center, BAM, the Joyce Theater and Dance Theater Workshop. He also danced with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet for four years and performed with Mark Dendy and Donald Byrd/The Group.
His musical theater credits include national tours of Hal Prince's Evita (as a tango dancer) and Disney's Beauty and the Beast, as well as three touring productions of Jerome Robbins' West Side Story: a European tour, a La Scala tour and an international tour.
