The Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program supports the future of opera by discovering and developing the talents of highly gifted artists to become the stars of tomorrow. Created and overseen by Plácido Domingo in the 2006/07 season, the program is a two- to three-year paid residency for singers and pianists transitioning from academic training to a professional career in opera. LA Opera uses its resources to not only provide top-tier instruction for the young artists, but also give them opportunities to sing mainstage roles, cover (or "understudy") lead roles, and perform in specialized young artist concerts and productions.

The Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program's training is individually designed for the needs of each artist, which include voice lessons, musical coachings, language studies, acting and dance classes. The artists work closely with superstar mezzo-soprano Susan Graham, who serves as Artistic Advisor for the program, as well as Mr. Domingo, James Conlon, renowned voice teacher Stephen King, and members of the LA Opera music and guest staff.

Alumni of the program have made important debuts at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, San Francisco Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, English National Opera, Frankfurt and Zurich, just to name a few. Many have also returned to LA Opera to sing leading roles.

The Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program is generously underwritten by the Colburn Foundation and Eugene and Marilyn Stein. Special support for Young Artist stipends is graciously provided by The Lenore and Richard Wayne Young Artist Fellowship. The Program was created with funding from the Flora L. Thornton Foundation.
