A Premiere Month

Posted on: January 12, 2021

We’re only 11 days into a tumultuous 2021, and with one groundbreaking operatic experience in the books, we’re asking you, “How would you feel about three more?

Starting this Friday, we’re releasing new opera (and revisiting old favorites) all month long. We start off with the premiere of our second Digital Short (a series of new commissions, pairing today's most exciting composers with extraordinary visual artists), The West is a Land of Infinite Beginnings, then we re-premiere Ellen Reid’s “p r i s m” and lastly, release our third Digital Short that was inspired by the same Pulitzer Prize-winning production. The best part? All of it is completely free. Take a look below for details on all the projects coming your way over the next few weeks.

The West is a Land of Infinite Beginnings

Up first is composer Missy Mazzoli and director James Darrah's exquisitely beautiful (yet deeply unsettling) piece, The West is a Land of Infinite Beginnings, premiering Friday, January 15th at 11:00 am PT.

This work reimagines a chilling scene from the 2018 opera Proving Up that told the story of a 19th-century farming family striving to "prove up" by fulfilling the tough requirements of the Homestead Act to earn the deed to their land.

Ellen Reid’s Pulitzer Prize-winning opera "p r i s m" returns to LA Opera for two weeks starting on January 26 at 4:00 pm PT. Join us as we revisit this collaboration with Beth Morrison Projects that tells the sobering story of a mother and daughter who struggle with the trauma of sexual abuse and the elasticity of memory that can follow in its wake.

We’re bringing this work out of the Vault just in time for the composer’s Digital Short to premiere a few days later.

Lumee’s Dream

After re-watching (or re-re watching) “p r i s m” on the 26th, tune in for the premiere of our third Digital Short, Lumee’s Dream, on Friday, January 29th at 11:00 am PT. Plunge into a serenely surreal world of vibrantly colored kaleidoscopic imagery inspired by a scene in "p r i s m.”  Director James Darrah and composer Ellen Reid collaborate (again) on this visually stunning work that captures the inner thoughts of a mother as she muses on her teenage daughter's vulnerability.
