Kevin Short made his LA Opera debut in 2007 as Porgy in Porgy and Bess.

His performances for the 2019/20 season include singing Porgy in Porgy and Bess and Doctor Grenvil in La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera, Don Pizzaro in Fidelio at the Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw, the Speaker in The Magic Flute at Washington National Opera, Porgy for the  Philadelphia Orchestra, and Castor in the world premiere of Castor and Patience by Greg Spears and Tracy K. Smith for the Cincinnati Opera. He recorded a solo aria album with Lawrence Foster and Orchestre de l’Opéra de Marseille on the Pentatone Music Label, which was released in 2018.

Recent work includes Porgy for Seattle Opera, the Old Servant in Elektra for the Metropolitan Opera, Jack Rance in The Girl of the Golden West at New York City Opera, Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress for Théâtre de Caen, l’Opéra de Reims, l’Opéra de Rouen, l’Opéra de Limoges and Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, Zaccaria in Nabucco and Dr. Primus in Getty’s Usher House for Welsh National Opera, Zaccaria for the Savonlinna Festival and Florida Grand Opera, Le Comte de Gormas in Le Cid at Theater St. Gallen, Bartolo in The Barber of Seville for Florida Grand Opera, Don Fernando in Fidelio at Seattle Opera, Rocco in Fidelio at Opera Omaha, the King in Aida at the Bregenzer Festspiele, the title role of The Flying Dutchman and Nick Shadow at the Staatstheater Bern, Mephistopheles in Faust and Leporello in Don Giovanni at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, Sarastro in The Magic Flute at the Spoleto Festival, Amonasro in Aida at Arizona Opera, the title role of The Mikado at Opera Omaha, Zaccaria, Rocca in Un Giorno de Regno, Archibaldo in Montemezzi’s L’Amore dei Tre Re, King Philip II in Don Carlos and Pagano in I Lombardi at Sarasota Opera, Sparafucile in Rigoletto at Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as well as Porgy in Naples, Florence, Linz, Luxembourg, Las Palmas, Orchestra Giuseppe Verdi in Milan and St. Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra on tour in Russia.

In addition to performing in over 20 operas at the Metropolitan Opera, he has also performed in the prestigious North American houses of Santa Fe Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, LA Opera, Washington National Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and the former New York City Opera. In Europe, he has also performed at Opéra Comique, Théâtre Caen, Grand Théâtre du Luxembourg, Oper der Stadt Köln, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Theater Aachen, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Theater Basel and festivals including Baden-Baden and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

He received his training at Morgan State University, B.S., the Curtis Institute of Music, M.M., and the Juilliard School of Music Opera Center. He was a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the International Competition for Verdian Voices, the Rosa Ponselle International Vocal Competition, the Bruce Yarnell Competition for Basses and Baritones, the Opera America Competition, the Leiderkranz Competition, and received awards and grants from the Sullivan Foundation, the Shoshana Foundation and Opera Index.
