Christine Rice is one of the leading British mezzo-sopranos of her generation. She was award with an MBE in 2022. A regular performer with the major European opera houses, including Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Frankfurt Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid and English National Opera, she has built a reputation both as a singing actress and a Handelian of the highest order.
Christine’s operatic roles include Judith in Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Concepcion in L’Heure Espagnole, the title role in The Rape of Lucretia, Carmen, Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Marguerite in The Damnation de Faust, Arsace in Partenope, Penelope in Il Ritorno d’Ulisse, Ruggiero in Alcina and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. She created roles in three major world premieres: Miranda in Adès’ The Tempest, Blanca in Adès’ The Exterminating Angel and Ariadne in Birtwistle’s The Minotaur. She made her debut appearances at the Metropolitan Opera as Hansel and Giulietta in The Tales of Hoffmann.
Christine also has a very busy concert career, appearing throughout the UK, Europe, North America and at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International and Aldeburgh Festivals working with conductors including Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner, Fabio Luisi, Sir Andrew Davis and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
