Hui He is a Chinese operatic soprano, renowned for her powerful and expressive voice, particularly in the dramatic repertoire of Italian opera. She was born in 1972, in Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, and she studied at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music.
She made her professional opera debut in 1998, portraying the title role in Turandot in Shanghai. In 2000, she was a winner of the prestigious Operalia competition, held in Los Angeles.
Since her breakout 2002 performance as Tosca at the Teatro Regio in Parma, she has appeared on the stages of the most prestigious theaters in the world. She performs frequently at La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Arena di Verona, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Paris Opera and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, among others.
She is particularly known for her performances of Verdi and Puccini roles, including the title roles of Aida, Tosca, Turandot and Madama Butterfly. In 2021, she celebrated her 100th appearance as Tosca, with performances of that role in Hamburg.
In 2018, Sony Classic released her album Verdi Opera Arias, recorded with the Orchestra of the Arena di Verona.
In 2019, she performed the title role of La Gioconda in Brussells and the title role of Adriana Lecouvreur at the Verona Philharmonic Theatre and the Salzburg Music Festival. She also celebrated her 15th consecutive summer appearing at the Arena di Verona, with appearances as Tosca and Aida.
Earlier this month, she debuted her first Wagnerian role, Senta in The Flying Dutchman, which she performed in Guangzhou and in Shanghai.
Hui He's voice is characterized by its rich and warm timbre, combined with her exceptional vocal range and dramatic intensity. She is known for her ability to convey deep emotions through her singing, captivating audiences with her powerful stage presence.
