LA Opera (LAO) is a mission-driven, non-profit organization that plays a significant role in the cultural life of Southern California. Hundreds of LAO employees and artists help bring to life world-class opera that preserves, promotes and advances the art form while embodying the diversity, pioneering spirit and artistic sensibility unique to Los Angeles.

Our productions are experienced by more than 100,000 audience members each year at our home at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. We reach many more through our community and school programs, Off Grand performances in venues across Los Angeles, and On Now digital content.

About the opportunity
LA Opera Connects is seeking energetic Camp Counselors for our two-week summer Opera Camp, which will take place July 22 to August 3, 2024.

As part of Opera Camp, approximately 50 to 60 students ages 9-17 rehearse and perform an opera, participate in a variety of movement and technical workshops, and go on field trips. (Visit LAOpera.org/OperaCamp for more information about the program.)

Opera Camp counselors will be responsible for an assigned group of 8-12 students for the duration of the program. The ideal candidates will be excellent multitaskers with a genuine passion for working with and empowering students in an artistic setting. Applicants should be patient, hardworking, enthusiastic, personable, and confident in their ability to support students as they learn new skills and connect with other students. Counselors will be asked to:

  • Provide support to teaching artists and Connects staff by helping to maintain a focused and productive rehearsal environment
  • Participate in camp activities, including but not limited to vocal and physical warmups, games, workshops, and field trips, and assist campers during these activities
  • Oversee the movement of their assigned group for daily arrival and departure, to and from lunch, and between activities
  • Facilitate group activities for participants during lunch and other periods
  • Report any concerns or incidents to Opera Camp staff
  • Provide event and production support during tech week and performances

Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working with children, teaching, performing, and/or as a camp counselor. A love of opera, music, and/or theater is a bonus. Bilingual skills are a plus.

The pay rate is $20/hour. Opera Camp will be held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. Program dates are July 22-26 and July 29-August 3, 2024 (approximate shift times are anticipated to be 8am-4pm or 5pm), plus a day of professional development TBA.

Camp Counselors will be required to complete tuberculosis and background check screening requirements, as a condition of employment.
