Nosferatu

F.W. Murnau's classic 1922 film

Overview

With striking imagery that has burrowed into the dark corners of the public's psyche for the past century, F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is as immortal as its iconic antagonist. The silver screen’s first vampire—played by Max Schreck as a twisted, clawed and fanged creature completely unlike Bela Lugosi's urbane Dracula—continues to influence cinematic horror to this day.

Since the original orchestral score by Hans Erdmann is largely lost, Nosferatu has afforded a host of musicians the opportunity to re-score the classic. LA Opera is proud to add its own Matthew Aucoin to that esteemed list. The company's incoming Artist in Residence will create and conduct a new score for chamber orchestra, incorporating composers of Murnau's time such as Schoenberg and Zemlinsky, as well as Schubert, Wagner and Weber, along with new music composed by Aucoin himself.

Performances will take place at the gorgeously restored Theatre at Ace Hotel, a 1927 Spanish Gothic movie palace in the heart of downtown (929 South Broadway, Los Angeles, 90015).
