(Los Angeles) August 5, 2015 — LA Opera's 30th Anniversary Season will open with unprecedented support from some of LA Opera's most generous donors, whose impassioned assistance has been instrumental to the company's continued growth and success. These dedicated leaders of the company will provide exceptional underwriting to launch the 30th Anniversary Season's opening production and the annual Opera Ball. LA Opera's opening production will feature a double bill of Gianni Schicchi and Pagliacci, running from September 12 through October 3, 2015, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. At the conclusion of the production's opening night on September 12, guests will be treated to a gala evening of dinner and dancing at the annual Opera Ball.
"It is truly overwhelming to have so many of our most generous supporters as part of this special anniversary of the company," said Plácido Domingo, LA Opera's Eli and Edythe Broad General Director. "Each of them holds a special place in the history of LA Opera, and they are leading the way for the next 30 years of artistic excellence on our stage and wonderful community programming. I want to personally thank Milan, Joyce and Aubrey, Barbara, Marc and Eva, and Selim and Mary for this remarkable demonstration of support at this momentous time."
The double bill of Gianni Schicchi and Pagliacci will mark the 13th season-opening production supported by the Milan Panic Family, beginning with The Girl of the Golden West in 2002. Mr. Panic was elected to the board of directors in 2002 and currently serves as vice chairman. He is a generous supporter of the performing and visual arts, as well as universities, research programs and international relief organizations for humanitarian aid.
Joyce and Aubrey Chernick have been supporters and patrons of LA Opera for more than two decades. A lifelong Angeleno, Mrs. Chernick has been a board member since 2009. She and her husband are generous philanthropists dedicated to making Los Angeles a vibrant and thriving community through support of a variety of local charities, which help to improve community investment, education, hunger and homelessness, preventive healthcare, and medical research.
The season-opening double bill will mark an unbroken ten-season tradition by Barbara Augusta Teichert of underwriting an LA Opera production or special concert. A board member since 2009, she supports American opera companies on both coasts through her philanthropy, including the Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera and Opera Philadelphia.
Few individuals have been as integral to LA Opera's success as Eva and Marc Stern, who have now championed over 15 ambitious productions and numerous additional artistic initiatives. Serving as chairman of the board since 2002, Mr. Stern has continually worked to solidify the company's unique artistic identity. The Sterns actively support arts and education across Los Angeles, serving on the boards of The Music Center and the Alliance for College-Ready Schools, among others, and establishing the Marc and Eva Stern Math and Science School, a public charter high school. Mr. Stern is also chairman of the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles.
Opera Ball Underwriters
The opening of LA Opera's 30th Anniversary Season will be celebrated with a 30th Anniversary Opera Ball, the costs of which will be entirely underwritten by Selim Zilkha, in honor of Mary Hayley. Two of LA Opera's most significant supporters, they have been closely involved with the company since its beginning. Ms. Hayley has been a member of the board of directors since 1993, and this year celebrates her 10th year as chair of the Opera Ball. Through their generous philanthropy, they established the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute (ZNI) at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, to research and better understand the underlying causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders. With this year's exceptional gift they are ensuring that all proceeds from the Opera Ball will benefit the company's productions and programs.
