Sharp new take on The Marriage of Figaro, updated
to present-day L.A., launches Figaro Unbound,
a three-month exploration of the revolutionary spirit
(Los Angeles) January 14, 2015 — Due to overwhelming ticket demand, LA Opera has scheduled an additional performance of ¡Figaro! (90210), a multicultural, contemporary adaptation of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.
The debate over immigration reform takes center stage in ¡Figaro! (90210), which recasts the title character and his fiancée as undocumented Mexican workers in the present-day Beverly Hills mansion of a real estate mogul and his actress wife. ¡Figaro! (90210) showcases Mozart’s score with an entirely new English (and Spanglish) libretto by Vid Guerrerio.
LA Opera presents this world premiere staging, directed by Melissa Crespo, at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre (4800 Hollywood Blvd., 90027) from January 16 through 18. The added performance will take place at 7pm on Sunday, January 18.
