  • Judy Baca: Hitting the Wall
    The Getty Center

Artist Judy Baca begins as an artist from the awareness that the land has memory that must be expressed and creates art that is shaped by an interactive relationship among history, people and place.  Baca’s public artworks focus on revealing and reconciling diverse peoples’ struggles for their rights and affirm the connections of each community to that place.  Her iconic c1984 mural Hitting the Wall commemorates female marathon runners and was designed to commemorate the first time women were allowed to compete in the Olympic games.

To underline the ongoing vulnerability of mural art, this focused display highlights the design, painting, destruction, and renewal of the mural on a freeway underpass in downtown Los Angeles. The presentation will include preliminary sketches, colorations, and an actual-size reproduction of a part of the mural.
