Digital Shorts: The Five Moons of Lorca

Posted on: December 8, 2020

Our brand new series of newly commissioned works kicked off with a reimagining of Gabriela Lena Frank's 2016 piece, The Five Moons of Lorca (Las cinco lunas de Lorca).

Set to Gabriela Lena Frank's composition and text from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, this work was inspired by the assassination of poet Federico García Lorca at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Dancer and choreographer Irene Rodríguez explores the beauty of García Lorca’s life as well as its tragic end in her astonishing performance that serves as a commentary on the dangers of political and cultural intolerance.

The power of opera stems from the fact that nearly every aspect of each and every production is lovingly created by hand, instrument or voice.

With a full orchestra and chorus, stagehands, singers, designers, costumers, technicians and more, each opera we produce employs 300-500 people.

The LA Opera Relief Fund provides much needed relief for those impacted by production cancellations and will help us continue to employ artists, and serve and support our community during this unprecedented time.
