Posted on: October 15, 2019

It’s Saturday morning and the kids are ready to run, play, sing, dance – sounds like it’s time to head to the opera. Wait, what? Turns out opera is more than just sitting and listening. Get ready for an unforgettable morning full of music, games, crafts, and dancing followed by a special opera written just for kids. (Don’t worry, we throw in some jokes for their grown-ups too.) Check out what people are saying about this magical program below:

Saturday Mornings at the Opera is an awesome, fun experience that parents feel good about. “It's the perfect way to relieve mom-guilt... even if you accomplish nothing else all weekend long, you took your family to the OPERA, so you win,” says mom and opera lover Laurie Peebler.

The opera is fun for kids and clever enough to make parents laugh out loud (told you we had jokes). Aubrey Trujillo-Scarr, a soprano appearing in The Marriage of Figueroa, says, “You get to hear great young singers who are always game for a laugh and passionate about sharing opera with everyone!”

Kids join in the fun with singing and dancing before the show. “I love teaching the mini voice lessons,” says soprano and workshop leader Nandani Sinha. “The kids are so excited to try out 'opera technique' and understand how all the sound comes out of the human body. Especially when they find out that the vocal cords are only as big as a nickel.”

Art workshops mean kids are guaranteed a souvenir to remember their time at the opera (no gift shop negotiating required). And don’t forget to make a postcard. Mom Laurie Peebler says, “The postcards that arrive home days later bring a second smile, because KIDS LOVE MAIL.”

You might inspire the next great music star. Opera League volunteer Alma Guzman says “Some kids have a hidden talent which gets awakened when they get exposed to opera. They learn to appreciate music in general. That is instrumental, orchestra, voices and acting. They may find their talents. Music was in my life since childhood, and I cannot imagine living without it.”
