A five-opera cycle by and for Angelenos: The Song of Los Angeles

In 2028, the Olympics are returning to Los Angeles and so is the Olympic Arts Festival. This gives us all a can’t-miss opportunity to celebrate the creativity and diversity of our amazing community in front of a world-wide audience. Working together with community partners from across LA County, LA Opera is planning one of the most ambitious projects in our 36-year history: a five-opera cycle called The Song of Los Angeles.

The cycle begins this spring with the premieres of the first two operas, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and at the The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens. The story continues with the world premiere of a trio of operas at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area in the summer of 2023. The entire cycle, The Song of Los Angeles, will then be revived during the Olympic Arts Festival in 2028.

The Song of Los Angeles will deeply reflect on and celebrate the stories of our local communities.

Starting this year, LA Opera will be partnering with organizations throughout Los Angeles County to put together Story Circles. Through this series of Story Circles, the creative team behind next year's Hahn Park project will connect with members of the community who live and work in Los Angeles. Community participants will be encouraged to share their perspectives and personal stories on various themes expressed in the Hahn Park project. These insights will go on to inform and shape the upcoming opera.

Story Circle Partner Organizations:

  • Museum of African American Art of Los Angeles
  • Autry Museum of the American West
  • Baldwin Hills Conservancy
  • View Park Preparatory High School

Since 2007, LA Opera has welcomed aspiring performers of all ages in the Los Angeles community—including singers, dancers and instrumentalists—to perform along with professional artists. We are excited to continue that tradition with The Song of Los Angeles. In the coming months we will be sharing opportunities for community participants, and you won't want to miss out!
