About LA Opera
LA Opera (LAO) is a mission-driven, non-profit organization that plays a significant role in the cultural life of Southern California. Hundreds of LAO employees and artists help bring to life world-class opera that preserves, promotes and advances the art form while embodying the diversity, pioneering spirit and artistic sensibility unique to Los Angeles. Our productions are experienced by more than 100,000 audience members each year at our home at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. We reach many more through our community and school programs, Off Grand performances in venues across Los Angeles, and On Now  digital content.

About the Opportunities
Contributed revenue is a primary and critical source of LA Opera’s income, and as we prepare to reopen our doors and again produce a full season of opera, we are hiring for several positions that provide important support for the fundraising work that makes LA Opera’s productions and programs possible, as follows:

  • Institutional Giving Assistant
  • Development Assistant
  • Individual Giving Assistant
  • Special Events Assistant

These are full-time, overtime-eligible positions with benefits, with a base annual salary range starting at $37,000. Our Development team is based at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. The normal schedule for these positions is Monday through Friday and will also include some weekend and evening work.  

INDIVIDUAL GIVING ASSISTANT: Reporting to our Senior Major Gifts Officer, this position provides support to our team of gift officers who maintain relationships with donors who give $3,500 to $25,000 annually. The Individual Giving Assistant maintains donor files, prepares solicitation mailings, manages the acknowledgement process, and otherwise provides assistance to the Patrons team and the broader Development department.

DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT: Reporting to the Director of Development Operations, the Development Assistant is responsible for the management of key donor information and oversees tracking of financial data and management of donor records, donor benefits fulfillment, along with providing other support to the Development department.

INSTITUTIONAL GIVING ASSISTANT: Reporting to the Director of Institutional Giving and Government Relations, the

Institutional Giving Assistant provides support for all aspects of our Foundation, Corporate and Government fundraising efforts. Responsibilities include writing reports for grants received, maintaining grants and corporate sponsorship tracking and calendar, helping to implement corporate fulfillment, assisting in the creation of corporate sponsorship presentations, tracking and drafting acknowledgement letters, assisting with data entry of donations, and providing other support to the Institutional Giving team and broader Development department.

SPECIAL EVENTS ASSISTANT: Reporting to the Director of Board Relations and Special Events, the Special Events Assistant provides administrative and event support for activities related to LA Opera’s special events. Responsibilities include creating invitations, guest lists, collecting and monitoring RSVP’s, scheduling events & meetings, coordinating, and tracking donor attendance and updates. The Special Events Assistant also provides logistical support for all the events on and off-site as well as other Development needs throughout the year.

Who we’re looking for
We are seeking individuals with some previous administrative experience, strong written and oral communication skills, and a strong aptitude for learning new processes and applications. Prior experience in a nonprofit/fundraising environment is preferred, as is experience with Tessitura or other databases.

Successful candidates will be very organized and detail-oriented and able to handle confidential information sensitively and discreetly. Our Development team members “roll up their sleeves” and work in a hands-on way to support one another and the organization, and the right people for these roles will thrive in such an environment.
