Stefano Trespidi  began his career working, very young, on the stage of the biggest opera house in the world, the Arena di Verona, where he learned the basis of his profession. In the late 1990s he received his master's degree in directing from the school of arts of Teatro la Scala in Milan, culminating with a staging of Giuseppe Sarti's opera Giulio Sabino in Ravenna.

Throughout the years he has collaborated with the most important stage directors in the world, including Franco Zeffirelli, Giancarlo Del Monaco, Hugo de Ana, Pierluigi Pizzi, Gilbert Deflo, Graham Vick, Denis Krief and Arnaud Bernard.

He first met Franco Zeffirelli  on the occasion of a staging of  Carmen at the Arena  di Verona in 1995. Since than, he has collaborated Mr. Zeffirelli for all of the director's new productions at the Arena: Il Trovatore (2001), Aida (2002), Madama Butterfly (2004) and Turandot (2010), as well as Pagliacci at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova (2010) and at the Filarmonico di Verona (2011). He also worked with Mr. Zeffirelli as “regista collaboratore” when Turandot opened the New Royal Opera House in Muscat.

Stefano Trespidi  has worked in some of the most important italian and international theatre such as: Teatro Verdi di Trieste, Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Teatro Verdi di Padova, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Maggio Musicale di Firenze, Ravenna Festival, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro Bellini di Catania, Arena di Verona, Opera de Lausanne, Opera Comique de Paris, Opera de Toulon, Opera de Marseille, Teatro Campoamor en Oviedo, el Baluarte de Pamplona, Hervatsko Narodno Kazaliste in Zagreb,  Mihailovsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg,  Tokyo International Forum, Astana Opera House, Los Angeles Opera.

Since 2005 he is the resident director for the summer opera festival held in Arena di Verona. In this role he revived a great number of production during the years.

His own productions have included Tristan und Isolde (Filarmonico di Verona, 2004); La Traviata (Filarmonico di Verona, 2005; Teatro verdi di Trieste, 2010); Ponchielli's Il Parlatore Eterno (Teatro Sociale di Lecco, 2006); Zanon's La Notte nel Bosco (Teatro Comunale di Adria, 2005 ); The Marriage of Figaro (Amarante, 2007); a Placido Domingo Gala (Arena di Verona, 2009); Aida (Tokyo International Forum 2010); Macbeth (Filarmonico di Verona, 2012); and a Verdi Gala (Arena di Verona, 2013).
