Emilio Sagi


Born in Oviedo, Spain, to a family of singers, Emilio Sagi made his debut as director in 1980 with La Traviata in Oviedo. From 1990 to 1999 he was general director of the Zarzuela Theatre in Madrid, where his first production in 1982, Don Pasquale, was followed by many other opera and zarzuela productions. From 2001 to 2005 he was artistic director of Teatro Real in Madrid. In 2008 he was named artistic director of the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao. His recent engagements as director include Carmen and Luisa Fernanda at LA Opera; La Finta Giardiniera at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; La Forza del Destino at the New National Theatre in Tokyo; The Daughter of the Regiment at the Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera Teatro Municipal de Santiago del Chile and at the Theater and der Wien; Le Chanteur de Mexico at the Théâtre du Châtelet de Paris, Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the Opéra de Lausanne, L’Equivoco Stravagante at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. In 2006 he won the “Premio Lírico Teatro Campoamor” for his production of The Barber of Seville in Madrid. Other engagements include new productions in Bilbao, Madrid, Barcelona, Oviedo, Liège, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco and Paris. (www.EmilioSagi.com)
