Filipino-American baritone David Castillo made his LA Opera debut as Atzuko in the world premiere staging of ¡Figaro! (90210), an update of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (by librettist Vid Guerrerio) set in modern-day Los Angeles.
He is a performer with a vast repertoire of music ranging from the baroque period to world premieres composed for his voice. He also is a member of VOX, a vocal quartet featured on the current season of America's Got Talent.
His 2015/16 season includes two world premieres, one with The Industry in Hopscotch, an opera experienced in cars zigzagging throughout Los Angeles, and another in a work by Jeffrey Parola. He will also make his European debut performing Schubert's Die Winterreise with Francois Chouchan at the Mairie du Troisieme Arrondissement in Paris, appear as Anthony Hope in Sweeney Todd with Fresno Grand Opera and with Townsend Opera, and return to Le Salon de Musiques at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
His 2014/15 season brought him across the country in opera, concert and recital. His operatic performances began with Moralès in two productions of Carmen, for his debut with Aspen Opera Theatre and his return to the New Orleans Opera, Ralph Fults in Andrew McIntosh and Melinda Rice's Bonnie and Clyde with The Industry and wildUP, and Oreste in Iphigénie en Tauride as a returning guest artist with USC Thornton Opera.
He has been honored as the 2010 Grand Prize Winner of the Steward Brady Competition, a 2011 Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Finalist, a 2010 National Finalist in the Classical Singer Competition, the 2013 Runner-up/2012 Encouragement Award Recipient from the Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition, and a multiple Opera Buffs, Inc. Grant Recipient. The New Orleans native holds degrees from the USC Thornton School of Music, studying under Rod Gilfry, and from Loyola University New Orleans, under the late Philip Frohnmayer.
