Bequest Language

If you’d like to leave a bequest to LA Opera in your will, we suggest using the following language.

 

General Bequest

“I give and bequeath to LOS ANGELES OPERA COMPANY, a California non-profit corporation,  whose address is 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA the sum of $______________  (or description of specific asset) (or ___________% of my estate) for its general corporate purposes.”

 

General Residuary Bequest

“I give and bequeath to LOS ANGELES OPERA COMPANY, a California non-profit corporation, whose address is 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA  all (or ________ % ) of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate for its general corporate purposes.”

 

Specific Bequest

“I give and bequeath to LOS ANGELES OPERA COMPANY, a California non-profit corporation,  whose address is 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA the sum of $______________  (or description of specific asset) (or ___________% of my estate) ( or ________% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate) to be used  for [describe purpose].  In the event that strict compliance with the foregoing restriction shall become impossible or impracticable, then the Board of Directors of Los Angeles Opera Company may, instead, use this bequest for its general corporate purposes which are, where  possible,  most nearly approximate to the original purpose of this gift.”

 

Endowment Bequest

“I give and bequeath to LOS ANGELES OPERA COMPANY, a California non-profit corporation, whose address is 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles, CA the sum of $______________ (or description of specific asset) (or ___________% of my estate) (or ____________% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate) to be added to the principal of the General Endowment of Los Angeles Opera Company {as a named endowment fund to be known as ____________}.  Distributions from the Endowment shall be used for (select one):

[Los Angeles Opera Company’s general corporate purposes]

[describe special purpose].  In the event that strict compliance with the foregoing restriction shall become impossible or impracticable, then the Board of Directors of Los Angeles Opera Company may, instead, use this bequest for its general corporate purposes which are, where  possible,  most nearly approximate to the original purpose of this gift.”
