Community Opera Chorus Network

LA Opera has a longstanding commitment to offering community singing and performance opportunities. The Community Opera Chorus Network is a group of ongoing community choruses, reflecting the specific community they serve, that fosters the physical, personal and communal benefits of singing. The choruses are located in East Los Angeles and are supported by a generous grant from The James Irvine Foundation. Through this project, LA Opera also creates larger public sing-along events that bring together families and multiple community organizations.

Zarzuela Project at the mariachi conservatory
Zarzuela is the beautiful and melodic form of musical theater popular throughout Spain and Latin America and known for its passion, fire and comedy. The Zarzuela Project is a collaboration with The Mariachi Conservatory. Inspired by LA Opera’s General Director Plácido Domingo deeply rooted love for the art form—his parents were famous zarzuela performers—the Zarzuela Project provides classes where participants are trained in singing and acting, and learn about the history of Zarzuela. Classes culminate in performances at various venues where family, friends and the local community enjoy this exciting art form.

Want to get involved? Participation in the Zarzuela Project is offered free of charge to adults and students. Classes are held on Wednesday evenings at The Mariachi Conservatory (on the campus of Salesian High School) and all are welcome to participate.
