Originally from Sydney, Australia, Rowena Hammill first studied at Northern Illinois University with Raya Garbousova and then was Janos Starker's teaching assistant at Indiana University. After a four-year period teaching at the University of Northern Iowa, she moved to L.A. to be the cello professor at CSU Northridge. In 1990 she joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and was associate principal cello for 10 years.
