Ute M. Engelhardt, a freelance director based in Berlin, was born in Calw, Germany. She studied musical theater directing at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and graduated in 2006 as a Master of Arts with a production of Viktor Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis (funded by the National Science Foundation Austria).
Her directing credits include, among others, Barabbas Dialogues by Aulis Sallinen at the Frankfurt Opera, Handel’s Orlando and Puccini’s Madame Butterfly at the Detmold State Theater, Lehár’s The Land of Smiles at the Nordharzer Städtebundtheater in Halberstadt and the world premiere of Luis Saglie’s El Dia de la Liberación in collaboration with the Musikwerkstatt Wien (Vienna Music Workshop).
She has collaborated with directors such as Barrie Kosky, Harry Kupfer, Robert Carsen, Christoph Nel and John Erath through assistantships and internships at the Frankfurt Opera, the Vienna State Opera and the Karlsruhe State Theater. She was honored in 2006 as a fellow of the Richard Wagner Foundation in Bayreuth. (www.ute-m-engelhardt.de)
