German director Nikolaus Lehnhoff began his career as assistant to Wieland Wagner and Karl Böhm at Bayreuth in 1960s. He made his operatic directing debut in 1972 in Paris with Die Frau ohne Schatten. Notable productions include Ring cycles in San Francisco (1983-85) and Munich (1987); Salome at the Metropolitan Opera (1989); Idomeneo at the Salzburg Festival (1990); Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg at La Scala (1990); and Palestrina at Covent Garden (1997).
